The Art of Listening: Foundations of Conversation in the Spirit

This course offers a formative journey into the heart of synodality through one of its most essential dimensions: listening. Rooted in the vision of a Church that walks together, the course invites participants to rediscover listening not merely as a communication skill, but as a spiritual, ecclesial, and missionary disposition.

Across four modules, participants will explore how authentic listening opens the way to communion, participation, and mission. The course begins by presenting listening as the foundation of synodal life—an attitude that allows the Church to hear God, the People of God, and the cries of the world. It then deepens into the relationship between listening, discernment, and dialogue, showing how these dynamics guide the shared search for the will of God.

A central focus of the course is the practice of Conversation in the Spirit, a concrete method that transforms meetings into spaces of prayer, attentive listening, and communal discernment. Participants will learn its structure, attitudes, and spiritual style, discovering how it fosters genuine encounter and builds consensus without suppressing differences.

Finally, the course opens toward a theology of listening, highlighting its implications for personal conversion, community renewal, and pastoral transformation. It emphasizes that synodality is not simply learned as a method, but embodied in people, relationships, and ecclesial structures.

Through videos, reflective exercises, and assessments, participants will be invited not only to understand these concepts, but to practice them in their own contexts.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand listening as the foundation of synodal life
  • Distinguish between hearing, listening, and spiritual discernment
  • Engage in dialogue oriented toward the common search for God’s will
  • Practice the Conversation in the Spirit in community settings
  • Identify concrete paths for fostering a culture of listening in their communities

This course is designed for anyone seeking to deepen their participation in a synodal Church and to cultivate a more attentive, discerning, and missionary way of relating to others.
